The quaint town of Samobor is situated in the northwest corner of Croatia, nestling on the eastern slopes of Samobor Hills next to the Gradna stream. It is only 20km distance from Croatia's capital Zagreb.

Samobor numbers some 15,000 inhabitants, but with the 77 surrounding villages the population comes to about 34,000.

The appeal of Samobor is manifold. Whether you are attracted to history, culture, nature or if you are a keen gourmet, Samobor will enchant you with its diverse riches.

But perhaps the most charming thing about Samobor is that it is a town made by the measure of man - life in Samobor is relaxed and hospitable and you do not have to wander far to experience all it offers.

Written evidence of the town's existence reaches as far back as 1242, when the Croatian-Hungarian King Bela IV mentions the community in his charter, giving it the title of  " free royal marketplace" . However a number of archeological sites surrounding Samobor show that the region was inhabited as early as the Stone Age.

Samobor is marked by history and culture everywhere you set your eyes: in the architecture, schools, churches, chapels, the museum and of course the Old Town of Samobor.

In order for culture to develop a town needs a strong tradition of industrious and able craftsmen, and these have always been the biggest pride of Samobor.

The town is also notable for the numerous events it organizes. The most popular is the

Carnival or "Samoborski Fašnik" when Samobor's inhabitants, as well as streets, buildings, restaurants and bars change their appearance in a traditional celebration of winter passing into spring. The whole town turns into a stage from 9-20 of February.

It is a time of song, drink and humorous pranks with an underlying satire and witty criticism of current socio-political events. Everyone feels free to express themselves more openly under the masks. But the carnival is not the only festive event in Samobor: there is also the Battle for Samobor 1441, Samobor Salami Festival (a competition in making traditional salamis), Samobor Spring Fair, the Days of Samobor Kremšnita (a famous traditional custard slice), Samobor Jazz Festival and the Autumn Musical Evenings.

We are delighted to invite you to spend your time in such a town as we know your stay will be pleasant and memorable.
